Officials employed at Warren-area school arrested, charged with drug possession on school grounds

Two school officials that work in Warren, including the district superintendent, were in court Monday after both were arrested for smoking marijuana in a parking lot Friday night.

The two women, both 38 years old, were caught smoking pot within a thousand feet of a school. Both Hollie Stang and Amanda Carroll are accused of driving while intoxicated and possessing marijuana on school grounds.

Stange, the current superintendent of Fitzgerald Public Schools, was also charged with possession of a weapon in a weapon free zone after police found a loaded rifle in her vehicle.

The other school official, Amanda Carroll, works as the food services director for Fitzgerald.

Both were arrested Friday after police saw Stange in Carroll's vehicle smoking marijuana at the corner of Nine Mile and Ryan in Warren.

After Stange left Carroll's vehicle, both left in separate vehicles, leading to both of them being pulled over.

Stange's three charges are all misdemeanors. She was arraigned in court Monday and given a $5,000 cash/surety bond. She was found with 50 grams of marijuana.

Her attorney plans to challenge the operating while under the influence and weapons charges.

William Barnwell said proving someone was under the influence of marijuana while driving is difficult because there's no legal limit like alcohol.

"And as far as to the weapons count, we’re talking about a hunting rifle, perhaps, not like a concealed weapon, not a machine gun. A hunting rifle - to my knowledge she’s not a hunter - I don’t know if she had any knowledge that that was even there," said Barnwell. "Is it even hers?"

Carroll was also charged with OWI with an occupant under 16 years old after police observed a 6-year-old child in her vehicle.

She had 25 grams of marijuana in her possession, prosecutors say.

Both women will be back in court in January.
