DETROIT (WJBK) - A grandmother said her house was shot up on Detroit's east side because she volunteered to help with Angels' Night.
There were nearly 40 bullets recovered at the scene and a homemade bomb thrown on the porch. There were no injuries but it left major damage. Now a non-profit organization is stepping up to offer a helping hand.
"This was unthinkable, unspeakable. with kids in the house, what are you thinking," Keena Harris said. "I don't know what to say, but I am very grateful to this organization."
The organization, Men for a Better Society, is giving Keena Harris a helping hand.
On Sunday morning someone fired multiple shots at her Maiden Street home on Detroit's east side early Sunday morning.
"When my kids walked through here, they found bullets, the police found bullets," she said. "They had tags all the way around, they found 36 bullets.
"There was bullet holes in the grandbaby's bedroom."
Fortunately, her grandchildren, including little Jojo here were not hurt.
"This was this boy's birthday. he turned 3 that day," she said. "Could you imagine the stress, the chaos, and what's on his mind."
Harris thinks the attack was in retaliation for her volunteering during Angels Night weekend and stopping people in the neighborhood for not following the rules.
"It's sad, we know this happens every day," said Ken Estell, from Men for a Better Society. "But we need to start making a difference in the community."
The non-profit organization came to her house Wednesday afternoon to replace her shattered windows, filled in bullet holes left inside her home among other repairs, caused by the gunfire.
Now, Keena Harris believes that gunfire and the homemade bomb came from people who got inside a vacant house right next door to her home.
"Then all of a sudden, boom boom boom, they conceded that way, never heard a vehicle."
