ORION TWP, Mich. (FOX 2) - Prosecutors in Oakland County have charged the suspect in the stabbing of an Orion Township caseworker.
On Friday, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald announced charges have been made against 34-year-old Gul Nabi Rahmati of Dearborn Heights in the case of the stabbing.
Officials say he was charged with two felonies, including assault with intent to murder, for an alleged stabbing attack on caseworker Zubair Mansuori. Rahmati was one of his clients.
The backstory:
On Wednesday, prosecutors say Rahmati arrived at Mansuori’s home. The two met outside when Rahmati then allegedly stabbed Mansuori multiple times before attempting to attack another man who came to help.
Officials continue and say Rahmati fled from the scene, then turned himself into the Dearborn Heights Police Department later in the day.
Both men are Afghan nationals and live legally in the US.
"Zubair Mansuori is the victim of a heinous and seemingly unprovoked attack," said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald. "I am committed to bringing his alleged attacker to justice."
Rahmati faces life in prison and is also additionally charged with Assault With A Dangerous Weapon.
Orion Twp stabbing: Investigators release new information on caseworker attack
Officials have new information regarding the alleged attack on a Samaritas caseworker at his home in Orion Township by someone he was helping through his job.
What they're saying:
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard says the victim is lucky to be alive and is now stable. They suffered 20 cuts and stabs.
Police are saying they have an idea of what led to the stabbing, as they believe it may be related to religion.
"They both were from Afghanistan. May go back to something along that lines, maybe different sects of the religion," said Bouchard.
FOX 2 reached out to Samaritas about the incident and they released a statement:
"We are deeply saddened by yesterday's incident involving one of our dedicated caseworkers. The safety and well-being of our staff, clients, and community remain our top priority."
Meanwhile, the investigation into the stabbing has faced a hurdle as police say the suspect has a lawyer and is not cooperating with authorities.
