Otter exhibit nearly triples in size at Detroit Zoo

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) - The Detroit Zoo's otter exhibit has nearly tripled in size and is ready for the public to enjoy.

Along with its previously existing waterfall and waterslide, the exhibit now features a new outdoor oasis with a flowing stream, sandy beach and trees.

The Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat expanded from 680 to 2,500 square feet and the North American river otters now have 9,000 gallons of water to play around in.

The expansion was funded by the Edward Mardigian Family Foundation.

Currently living at the exhibit are:

Storm, 16, rescued in 2002 from the bottom of a hill along Lake Michigan
Whisker, 14, came to the zoo in 2009 after being found under a house in Washington State
Lucius, 11, born at another zoo but came to the Detroit Zoo in 2009
Sparky, 3, Whisker and Lucius' baby

"It's important that we provide animals with habitats that are naturalistic and expansive and that ensure they are thriving and not just surviving," said Scott Carter, Detroit Zoological Society chief life sciences officer. "The otters have more room to roam - and swim - and visitors have more viewing options."
