Police: Detroit bus driver stabbed by angry, injured passenger

A man is in custody after a DDOT bus driver was stabbed Tuesday night.

Police say the suspect stabbed the driver for refusing to take him to the hospital.

The stabbing happened just before 11 p.m. at a stop at Greenfield and 6 Mile roads. Police on the scene told FOX 2 the attacker had been shot, and that he tried to get on the bus, demanding a ride to the hospital.

When the driver refused, police say the man pulled out a knife and stabbed him.

The man tried to run off, but was apprehended by fellow bus riders who held the man down until police arrived.

"I think it's a wonderful thing. I think our citizens need to understand that we can't do this alone, that we do need their support and their assistance in a lot of situations," a police officer on scene told FOX 2. "I'm not suggesting they take the law into their own hands, but, again, the support that was shown tonight was greatly appreciated."

The condition of the bus driver is not known at this time.

The suspect, who has not yet been named, is in the hospital in police custody this morning. Police are investigating the circumstances of his shooting injury.
