Police looking for answers in 'random' bus stop shooting

The man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting at a Highland Park bus stop is in custody as police try to figure out a connection between the victim and the suspect.

Stanley Carter, 59, was waiting at the bus stop along Woodward Avenue at Tennyson Street around 5:30 a.m. last Wednesday when he was suddenly shot by a man who walked by. Police suspect a man named Malcom Benson is responsible for the shooting, and have taken Benson into custody.

Investigators are working hard to figure out a motive for the shooting.

"I don't think he knew the guy. I think this was just a random act," says Kevin Coney from the Highland Park Police Department. He said at a news conference Monday morning that the department got most of their tips through CrimeStoppers from neighbors and those who ride the bus.

Benson is expected to be charged sometime this week.
