Car slams into apartments for 2nd time in 3 years

Within the past three years, the apartment complex has been crashed into multiple times. Residents say a guard rail between Coolidge Highway and the apartments is necessary.

A 29-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle and crashed into an apartment complex on Monday.

The crash took place at Coolidge and Webster in Royal Oak.

The driver is suspected of distracted driving, according to police. She suffered minor injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to have played a role in the crash, police said.

Within the past three years, the apartment complex has been crashed into multiple times.

In August 2023, the driver of a pickup truck died after going through the first floor of the building. Police say he suffered a medical emergency behind the wheel.

With each crash, residents are getting more and more frustrated. They say a  steep curve of Coolidge Highway, next to the apartment building, has proven to be dangerous.

"You’re kidding me! Again?" said Cherrie Grogan, who lives at the apartment complex. "This is the third time in three years."

The apartment that the woman crashed into on Monday is Adam Droelle's.

"I was glad nobody was home, but I was worried about the cats more than anything," Droelle said. "I thought they had got out."

The cats were okay, but his apartment sustained some damage.

"The couch and some other little things were damaged, and just the pride of living here," Droelle said.

According to several residents, some sort of barrier should be built between the road and the apartment complex to stop crashes like this from occurring so frequently.

"What I would like to see is some type of a barricade put up along the road here, because this is a sharp curve," Grogan said.

However, putting up a barrier falls on the city, according to the property management company.

"I’ve reached out to them," Droelle said. "They wanted everyone to sign an agreement and show up to city council."

FOX 2 Detroit has also contacted the mayor of Royal Oak to inquire about the steps required to install a barrier and is currently awaiting a response.
