Port Huron off-duty officer killed, 2 others shot, suspect arrested in Southfield
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) - A suspected gunman was arrested in Southfield Friday morning after several people were shot overnight in Port Huron.
The 36-year-old man from Mt. Morris is accused of shooting three people at an apartment complex in Port Huron.
One person died from gunshot wounds, identified as 45-year-old Joel Wood, an off-duty Port Huron police lieutenant who served 23 years with the department.
A 29-year-old Clyde Township woman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and is in serious but stable condition. The other victim, a 57-year-old man also from Clyde Township, sustained a non life-threatening gunshot wound. Their names have not been released out of respect for their privacy.
According to police in Port Huron, the suspect showed up at the apartment and found his wife with the lieutenant. Police said the man then shot the officer while his wife ran next door for help. Police said he then shot her three times in the stomach and shot the neighbor in the leg.
The St. Clair Sheriff said the lieutenant was visiting the woman when the attack occurred.
According to investigators, the suspect and his wife are going through divorce. Neighbors say they have a 3-year-old daughter who was at her grandmother's at the time of the shooting.
The suspect then fled the scene and undercover officers tracked him to a Marathon gas station at 10 Mile and Telegraph in Southfield, where he was arrested around 5 a.m.
The suspect is being held in the St. Clair County jail.
