Two 'unaccounted for' after Orion Township condominium explosion

The explosion happened at Keatington New Town Condominiums on Waldon between Joslyn and Baldwin Roads and police says the scene is still a "rescue not a recovery."

Dozens of first responders were on the scene of a massive fire on Waldon in Orion Township after what police say was an explosion.

The explosion happened at Keatington New Town Condominiums on Waldon between Joslyn and Baldwin Roads in the early evening hours.  

Orion Township Fire Chief Ryan Allen said Consumers Energy is working to ensure the scene is safe and is checking the area for potential gas leaks. He said two people are "unaccounted for" after the incident and that it is still a "rescue not a recovery." Meanwhile, two people have been taken to the hospital. 

Allen told the press that one building exploded, causing damage to several others.

Officials give update on Orion Township home explosion

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard posted on social media that there had been an explosion on Waldon between Joslyn and Baldwin Roads. Officials are urging people to stay away from the area.

Allen said nearby churches have opened their doors for anyone displaced, including Woodside Bible Church a mile down the road from the scene. 

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard posted on social media that it was a potential gas explosion, though unconfirmed as of Tuesday night. 

A Consumers Energy spokesperson released a statement regarding the explosion, saying:

"Earlier this evening we were notified of the explosion in Orion Township and sent crews to the scene immediately. As first responders are still actively battling the fire, we do not have additional information about the cause of the explosion or about the status of anyone in the building. Our crews are on site and will move ahead with their work once first responders have deemed it safe to do so. We are committed to the safety of residents and the community and will continue working closely with public safety officials."
