Puppy in Romeo recovering in animal shelter after alleged abuse

A dog who was allegedly dipped in boiling water is fighting for his life at a dog rescue in Romeo.

What we know:

It is a heartbreaking and graphic scene for the Detroit Animal Welfare Group, who are trying to help a 4-month-old mixed breed beagle named Gideon, who workers say was dipped in boiling water.

"He is very, very painful, excruciating pain. I’ve never seen a dog really in this much pain," said Director Kelley Labounty.

She says they received a text message from a Facebook post from Gideon's owner Sunday night that he needed medical attention quickly. The rescue said the owner's daughter had put Gideon in boiling water. They eventually got him and sent him straight to the vet, where Labounty says surgery may be in his future.

On Monday, the rescuers said he had a high fever and his electrolytes were abnormal.

"We did report it to Michigan Humane Security Anti-cruelty, and they would take it from there," said Labounty. "They have the information."

What you can do:

Gideon still needs lots of care, and the medical bills are taking a toll. Donations are being made, and if you want to donate, you can do so by tapping here.

Labounty later says there is some good news, as Gideon is still a loving little guy who is always wanting to cuddle and be loved. They'll investigate what happened and hopefully hold the owner accountable.
