Race for mayor of Detroit enters final few hours
DETROIT (WJBK) - It's Election Day and just a couple hours are left before the polls close.
FOX 2 is keeping a close eye on several races tonight, including the one for mayor of Detroit.
About 30,000 votes were returned before today and delivered for processing.
FOX 2 caught up with both candidates Mike Duggan and Coleman Young II as they cast their votes themselves:
"All the investment right now is going downtown. We need a mayor that's going to take care of the neighborhoods. Voters should shade in my name in that ballot because I'm un-bought and un-bossed, my back isn't bent. It's not meant to be ridden. If you want somebody who's going to fight against injustice, fight against these insurance companies, not get in bed with them - vote Coleman Alexander Young," he said.
"I've worked as hard as I can the last four years. I think the city is in a very different place than it was four years ago. I think there are a lot of jobs coming back, a lot of people being hired and I think we can get the recovery of downtown and Midtown and spread it through the neighborhoods the next four years and that's what I'm going to try and do," Duggan said.
The administrator for the Department of Elections says there have not been any polling issues today but there were a few reports suggesting otherwise, we'll have more on that at 6 p.m.
Polls close at 8 p.m. and we'll find out if conventional wisdom prevails or if there will be an upset tonight.
