Rocket Community Fund gives new home to mom and 4 children in time for the holidays

A Detroit mom and her family have a little extra to celebrate this holiday - with a new home.

Less than a week before Christmas - a huge present for Danielle Welcome and her four kids. A new, fully furnished home on Detroit’s west side

"We have started a program at the Rocket Community Fund which is really to help families whose home are too far beyond repair to be able to get access to clean, healthy, stable and safe housing," said Laura Grannemann, Rocket Community Fund.

Working with the City of Detroit and Humble Design - the pilot program identifies Land Bank homes that can be renovated and furnished.

"We always tell our clients we really want this to be a home, where we’re not just bringing furniture, we really want this to be home," said Chris Decker of Humble Design.

The new home has five bedrooms - including one for each child.

Welcome: "You have your own big girl bedroom."

"My favorite color - purple," said one of the girls.

And of course, one for mom.

"A perfect den for a mama bear," she said, laughing.

The hope is to rehab the family’s old home and give it to another family in the future.

Touring the new home, one of the children summed it up:  "A miracle," he said. "Because it has so (much) cool stuff that we never dreamed of."

"Honestly it’s warm," Welcome said. "We were fighting some tough times where we’re coming from."

And all of this.

"I’m still telling them don’t pinch me," Welcome said. "Because if it is a dream I don’t want to wake up - this is just beyond words."
