Roseville police officer pulled over for DUI arraigned for reckless driving

(WJBK) - An off-duty Roseville police officer was arrested for suspicion of DUI in Ferndale, last month.

Officer David Raymer, 40, was then given a ride home -- instead of being locked up.

"He was in the car, his wife was in the car with him at the time," said Roseville Police Chief James Berlin. 

Arraigned Wednesday on one charge of reckless driving Ferndale police say cops pulled over Raymer because they were suspicious that Raymer was driving drunk.

"When incidents like this happen, it is an embarrassment for all of us," Berlin said. "Not just here or the Ferndale department, but the profession in general."

The incident occurred just after midnight on Nov. 9 and, according to Ferndale police, once the officer learned who he pulled over, he called his supervisor. The allegedly intoxicated Roseville officer was not arrested but driven home, along with his wife.

Ferndale Police Chief Tim Collins was not available for comment Wednesday. He's previously said the incident wasn't discovered until another officer came forward a week later.  Collins called it "poor decision making" by one of his lieutenants.

Ferndale launched an internal investigation along with Roseville police.

"We take it very seriously and it will be dealt with in a very serious manner when the investigation is concluded," Berlin said.

Chief Berlin says Raymer who has been with the department for 14 years and has no previous issues, is on paid leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

"Police officers are held to a higher standard," Berlin said. "The public expects it; we expect it of ourselves."

Meanwhile Raymer pleaded not guilty and was released on a $1,500 personal bond is due back in court Jan. 16.
