Second sickout day in a row for one Detroit Public school

DETROIT (WJBK) - Some Detroit Public School students are missing a second day of school at Bates Academy after several teachers called out sick again. This is on the heels of another major teacher sickout on Thursday, in which seven Detroit Public schools were closed.

The closing of the seven schools resulted in four thousand students missing class. You can read more about that here.

Last week, three schools were cancelled for the same reason.

The sickouts, or "Snyder Flu" as some are calling it, is a response to the governor's proposed school reform plan, which is aimed at paying off hundreds of millions of dollars in debt by essentially creating two school districts. One district would absorb the debt and the other would educate the children.

DPS has been under state control since 2009 because of the financial situation. As a result, teachers have dealt with paycuts and higher healthcare costs. They're fighting back with now with these sickouts.

The district's emergency manager says they do have the right to review these absences and if they're not documented with proper medical paperwork, they could result in disciplinary action.
