Several streets permanently close for Gordie Howe bridge construction

DETROIT (FOX 2) - Some roads in southwest Detroit are permanently closing as part of the Gordie Howe International Bridge construction project. 

Crews broke ground on the $6 billion project last summer, and the landscape in the area has been changing ever since. 

Beginning Monday, April 29, 2019 several roads between South Street and Jefferson Avenue will be permanently closed so construction crews can built the more than one-and-a-half-mile bridge connecting Detroit to Windsor. 

Those roads that will be permanently closed are: Schroeder Street; Waterman Street; Rademacher Street; Reid Street; Crawford Street; Livernois Avenue; Holly Street; and Beulow Court. 

Several other streets will be temporarily closed. Those include the Fisher Service Drive from Lansing Street to Campbell Street, which will re-open May 3; the Fisher Service Drive at the Clark Avenue intersection, which will re-open April 30; and Clark Avenue from Fort Street to the Fisher Service Drive, which will re-open May 2.

Martha Goode has lived in the area for nearly 30 years. She's seen a lot of changes in her neighborhood throughout the decades - changes that have mixed reactions among neighbors. 

"This is a wonderful opportunity. Gordie is gonna take us along the way," Goode said. 

"It's not only for Detroit, this is for the United States. I think this is a very good idea because it's going to be more money for the city, for the state," Carlos Moreno said.

"[The road closures] affect me a lot because the southwest is bombarded by railroads. So, say for instance, one [train] is coming through and you can't get past through," says Arif El-Boukari, who lives in the area. 

The bridge is set to be complete in 2024.
