Sixth Circuit won't hear Kwame Kilpatrick appeal

Kwame Kilpatrick's latest bid for a new trial has failed.

The decision came after the federal judges on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals declined to review an appellate court ruling handed down earlier this year that found the former Detroit mayor received a fair trial.

Attorneys for Kilpatrick and his close friend Bobby Ferguson, a city contractor, had argued in January that the judge who presided over their trial on public corruption charges had made serious errors that resulted in wrongful convictions on charges of racketeering, extortion, fraud and tax violations.

Kilpatrick was convicted on 24 counts and Ferguson on 9 counts. Kilpatrick's father, Bernard, faced several charges but was only convicted of filing a false tax return. He served about a year in federal prison and did not appeal his conviction. He is now free.

Kilpatrick is serving a 28-year sentence at the federal prison in El Reno, OK. His next step may be asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review his case, but the odds of the High Court agreeing to take up his case, let alone overturn his conviction, are considered a longshot.

Ferguson is serving a 21-year sentence in federal prison.
