WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) - One person is dead and a second injured after a plane crash in Clinton near Lima Center Road and Michigan Avenue Monday afternoon.
Michigan State Police say the victim is a 46-year-old Dearborn man who was the flight instructor. The student is from North Carolina and currently enrolled at the University of Michigan.
The student is currently at U-M Hospital in Ann Arbor for his injuries. There is no update on their status from officials yet.
The Federal Aviation Administration is at the scene conducting an investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board will be arriving to conduct an investigation Tuesday morning.
The crash could be seen overhead by the SkyFOX helicopter showing the damage to the crash, leaving the cockpit nearly destroyed.
The student inside needed extraction to be removed from the wreckage, sources told FOX 2.
"The crash is still an active scene so we ask the public to stay away from the area," the Michigan State Police said in a social media post.

The small plane is a Cherokee Cruiser model. The Cherokee "(is made of) aluminum alloy," says the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association website. "The airplane is a two-place (optional four-place), low wing, single-engine airplane equipped with fixed tricycle landing gear, having a steerable nose wheel and two main wheels. This airplane is certificated in the normal and utility category."
