Family needs help after house fire on Christmas Day
Sometimes the images have to tell the story. The charred outside and inside a townhouse on Walden in Southfield is a mess of mangled wet insulation on the roof and wall on the ground. That’s what you see, but what people heard, is a different story.
DETROIT (FOX 2) - A family of seven is forced to start over after a fire ripped through their apartment on Christmas morning.
"This has been terrible. It has been terrible in our family," said Latoya Amos, whose home was destroyed in the fire. "I don’t have the words."
Sometimes the images have to tell the story. The charred area outside and inside a townhouse on Walden in Southfield is a mess of mangled wet insulation on the roof and wall on the ground.
"I think it was 5:30 in the morning and hearing this lady scream and holler and I finally open the door, and she was on fire still and we had to help put her out but she would not stop until everybody was out," said Amos.
The woman Amos is talking about is her neighbor, who risked her own life to save everyone because the fire wasn’t just in Amos’s home, it was also in four other units including this brave woman who Amos says was badly burned.
"She didn’t care about herself. I can’t forget that image," she said.
"We want to thank her. Because in the midst of everything, she actually saved the other four units of people." said Paige Robinson. "She banged, so to wake someone out of their sleep to bang and continue to bang on the door trying to get everyone else out, even through everything she's going through. She was a miracle, she helped us, my mom was able to help her. We’re just trying to pick up our life from here."
Amos says she and five other family members were living in their townhouse unit, but four other homes are apparently unlivable because of this Christmas Day blaze.
