This weekend the Southfield Freeway closes between I-96 and Eight Mile Road for bridge demolition work

The closure, which also includes the service drives, began at 9 p.m. Friday night and will last until Monday Nov. 13 when it will be reopened at 5 a.m.

Pedestrian bridges at Glendale Street and Tournier Street between I-96 and Grand River will be demolished. For safety reasons the crumbling bridges have been closed for the past few months.

The work is expected to be completed and the roads reopened by rush hour Monday morning.

Their removal is part of a larger project to remove and replace five pedestrian bridges in Detroit, according to a release from the Michigan Department of Transportation.
