Sterling Heights Meijer evacuated after man makes ISIS threat (UPDATE)
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - UPDATE: Sterling Heights police is now saying that the initial report was a misunderstanding.
The clerk was interviewed by the ATF and Sterling Heights and clarified that a customer never threatened using the terror group ISIS.
Instead a customer earlier in the day at 2:30 bought a new backpack and spoke with a store employee about current events including ISIS. He left the old backpack in a cart but the clerk never threw it out like they promised.
Once in the parking lot, the cart with the backpack was brought into the store and the ISIS discussion was recalled by another employee who caused the stir and alerted the manager, police said.
The store reopened at about 8:30 p.m. after it was determined by police to be safe.
This is a developing story, stay with FOX 2 for updates. The original story is below.
The Meijer at 16 Mile and Van Dyke had been evacuated early Monday evening.
A customer inside got into an alleged argument with an employee and made threats at about 5:30 p.m.
The man went to the customer service desk about a return and allegedly at some point, took off his backpack and said "Have you ever heard of ISIS?"
He then fled the store, leaving the backpack inside.
The store was then evacuated by the manager and police were called. So far, no arrest has been made.
