DETROIT - From crime scene to growing memorial, the pain of a community is plainly on display outside a now closed Detroit Coney Island after the owner was shot and killed. Long-time customers are stopping by, in total disbelief.
“Good people. I just can't believe it. I'm just in shock,” said customer Paul Pauley.
Pauley has known the owner for 20 years. He considers him family. In this time of need he wants to help.
"I came down here to check it out, see what was going on. If his family was here I’d give them some money. I don’t know.”
Franco Juncaj or “Frank” as he was known - was shot and killed during what police say was an attempted robbery Thursday morning.
Frank co-owned the coney with his brother and worked there every day, building lasting relationships with his guests. They include many River Rouge police officers.
"As a matter of fact, the morning of the shooting, a few of our officers were just up there talking with Frank. They ate at about 3:30 that morning,” said Detective Dasumo Mitchell
Mitchell has known Frank since he was 13 years old.
"He would be like ‘Hey, where have you been? I haven't seen you. You got on a new shift.’ That’s just who Frank was. He knew his customers well and he treated everybody with respect."
He, like so many others in the community, are seeking justice for a man who made a difference in a lot of lives.
"Someone always knows something,” said Mitchell. “Definitely, if you know anything, tips can come in to Detroit Police or Crime Stoppers."
Each customer Fox 2 spoke with said Frank had the unique ability to make each and every customer who walked through the door feel special.
