Stolen earbuds lead police to Troy home invasion suspect

Earbuds a man stole from a Troy apartment led to his arrest later that day, police said.

According to Troy police, Brian Maurice Kellum, 41, broke into a home on Big Beaver near John R on Friday.

What we know:

The apartment resident returned home around noon and discovered the break-in.

"When they returned they found all their stuff in disarray. Obviously, had been broken into, the door had pry marks all over it," Troy Police Chief Josh Jones said.

Among the items stolen included a pair of earbuds. Police tracked the location of those earbuds shortly after the break-in and found Kellum's exact location. Jones said officers surveilled Kellum after spotting a vehicle they believed was connected to the crime.

At 1:30 p.m., Kellum was taken into custody. He is now facing two counts of second-degree home invasion charges. He was given a $100,000 cash/surety bond.

What we don't know:

Though it's clear Kellum pried open the door to the unit that was burglarized, police are still trying to figure out how he got into the apartment building.

Jones said police believe the break-in was a crime of opportunity, but they don't know if Kellum broke into the main door of the building or followed someone inside.

What's next:

Kellum, who has a history of burglary and home invasion in Georgia and Florida, could be facing even more charges because police found evidence linking him to other crimes.

"We recovered some property that linked him to a couple other home invasions," Jones said.
