A complete stranger raises $5.000 for an elderly man battling cancer who's fallen behind on his rent.

It all happened thanks to a chance encounter in court. They met just eight days ago but already Justin Smith and John Williams have an incredibly strong bond.

"I think he's so wonderful," Williams said.

Struggling with cancer, and struggling to pay his rent, Williams was in court facing eviction. Smith, who is an attorney, just happened to be in court that day.

"When all was said and done he turned to the lawyers waiting for other cases and said 'Help me, help me,'" Smith said. "Those were the last words that my mother who was dying of cancer said to me and it moved me tremendously."

So Smith started a GoFundMe page and within just 24 hours he raised $5,000 for Williams.

"I'm going to take him to my grave with me, I love him," Williams said.

"What's beautiful about this, not only can we pay off judgment where he was facing eviction," Smith said. "But we can get him ahead of the game so he can focus on his breathing and feeling a little bit of comfort."

Williams says he is forever grateful and says he can't believe someone he didn't even know, wanted to help him.

"God is a good guy," Williams said. "He can bring people together."
