Stranger's loose tire flew across I-94, caused police car and ambulance to crash: police
DETROIT (WJBK) - Michigan State Police say a patrol vehicle and an ambulance were involved in an accident Thursday night when a tire flew off another car and across the median of Interstate 94.
Police say the patrol vehicle and the ambulance were traveling together on westbound on I-94 in Detroit when the accident happened. The vehicles were following each other and were not engaged in emergency driving, MSP says.
Police say a Dodge Durango was on eastbound I-94 when its tire suddenly flew off. The driver was able to pull the car to the side of the road, and called a tow truck. Police say the driver could see commotion involving a police car and an ambulance on the other side of the freeway, but that she didn't think anything of it.
Police say the driver later saw in news stories that the tire that flew off her vehicle caused the crash with the ambulance and police car. Police say she called her boyfriend, who owns the vehicle, to find out what to do.
Police say, though, that an anonymous tip to the MSP 911 center led authorities to the boyfriend's home, where the woman gave a full confession.
The case has been turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutor for review. It's not clear yet if anyone will face charges.
Police say no one was injured.
