Street racing could be to blame in deadly go kart-motorcycle crash, police say
DETROIT (WJBK) - Police are investigating a fatal crash on Detroit's east side that may have been the result of street racing, police say.
Police say the driver of a motorcycle and the driver of a go kart were both speeding on northbound French Road near Almont Street, which is near E McNichols Road and Van Dyke. Police say they may have been racing.
It appears the driver of the go kart turned in front of the motorcycle, causing the accident. Police were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
The 21-year-old driving the go kart died. The 30-year-old on the motorcycle is in serious condition.
"Over the last month, we have followed and tracked anywhere between three to 500 street races around the city of Detroit, primarily on Saturday night about 2 or 3 in the morning. It's extremely dangerous," says Detroit Police Chief James Craig.
Police haven't yet released any information on the victims of the crash.
