Student charged after stolen handgun found during 'routine search' at Flint high school
FLINT, Mich. (FOX 2) - A student at an alternative high school in Flint is now facing charges after authorities say he had a stolen gun in his backpack.
According to the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office, the 18-year-old Flex High School student was detained after the 9mm handgun was found in his bag during a "routine search" Monday morning.
School employees seized the gun and turned it over to police, who arrested the student. After police took the weapon, they learned it was stolen.
"I want to commend school officials for their efforts in discovering the weapon, detaining the student and seizing the gun before any chance of something tragic occurring," said Prosecutor David Leyton. "While it appears from the investigation that no threats were ever made against anyone during this incident, I want to make it very clear to the public that bringing a gun or any lethal weapon into a school is strictly prohibited and we will be vigilant in holding persons accountable under the law. This is a very serious matter and it is being dealt with accordingly."
The student is now charged with receiving and concealing a stolen firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
