Suspect in 2-year-old shooting has turned himself in

Police say the suspect wanted in the shooting a 2-year-old last night has done a safe surrender.

The suspect wanted in the shooting of a 2-year-old Tuesday has turned himself in on Wednesday, Detroit police said.

Darius Lacy is in custody in connection to the shooting of the child, who was hit in the leg at Jefferson Square Apartments on the east side. The child is expected to recover.

The domestic dispute occurred between an old boyfriend and a new boyfriend, escalating into violence.

"We have the subject, he did a safe surrender and turned himself in," said Todd Bettison, the Interim Detroit Police Chief. "We have two subjects in custody. Mr. Lacey turned himself in this afternoon."

It is still unclear who shot first and that the investigation is ongoing.

"The most important thing is the child is expected to recover," Bettison said. "This is a good day."

Suspect in 2-year-old's shooting was a 'safe surrender' says Detroit police chief

Interim Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison says that the suspect wanted in connection to the shooting of a child has turned himself in.

Bettison said both men took accountability in turning themselves in.

The chief says Ray Winans with Detroit Friends and Family was contacted. He runs one of the community violence intervention groups.

"(The two men" said I want to turn myself in to the Detroit Police Department, but I'm a little apprehensive," Bettison said. "They came here, no fanfare and (it) allowed them to keep their dignity."

Police say neither man has been charged yet.  Bettison said he is not sure when the warrant package will be turned over to the prosecutor's office.

He added that he would like to add a Safe Surrender program to the Detroit Police Department eventually.
