A minor crash Wednesday morning on I-75 in Saginaw County escalated when a suspected drunk driver slammed into a Michigan State Police vehicle.

MSP said a trooper was responding to a crash on the northbound side of the freeway near the M-46 exit around 6:45 a.m. when another vehicle hit their vehicle. The trooper was not inside the patrol vehicle, but was forced to jump out of the way to avoid being struck.

The trooper suffered a minor injury while jumping out of the way, while the people who were involved in the first crash were hurt in the second crash. Those occupants and the trooper were all taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

Police arrested the at-fault driver. An investigation is ongoing.

Big picture view:

Michigan's Move Over law requires drivers to slow down and move over for police, fire, EMS, and road service workers, including tow trucks and MDOT courtesy vehicles that have their emergency lights activated.

If there is no room to move over, drivers must slow down to at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit when approaching the vehicle and pass with caution.
