Suspects smash truck into Wayne jewelry store, don't take anything

WAYNE, Mich. (WJBK) - In the span of just 15 seconds, suspects plowed through the front of a jewelry store but appear to leave with nothing.

They smashed through the front window of Leo's Jewelry Store in Wayne around 4:40 a.m. Wednesday morning and were gone as fast as they got there - without appearing to have taken a single thing.

The truck, a stolen Dodge Ram, crashed through the front window. One man jumped out and was joined by a second man who showed up on a motorcycle. The two and inside and back out just 15 seconds later. They hopped on the bike and sped off.

Remarkably, police say it doesn't appear anything was taken. The damage, however, is significant. Leo's bills itself as the oldest family owned business in Wayne - it was originally a toy and gift shop in 1945.

"I heard the crash and thought it was at the intersection over there - I looked out and saw a couple guys run out of the jewelry store, hop on motorcycles, and take off down Wayne road," David Barryman said.

Neighbors say this is not the first time the jewelry store has been broken into and other businesses have been targeted lately: a clothing store a couple doors down is boarded up as well.

"This is a peaceful community - you just don't expect that type of thing to happen out here," Dwight Ross said.

Ross works at the nearby Puffer Reds boutique and says this isn't expected in the area.

But Barryman said it's just becoming all too common - no matter where you call home.

"This happens everywhere now. You can't hide, wherever you live," Barryman said.
