Teens arrested after stealing Uber driver's Cadillac in Eastpointe

Police in Macomb County say a group of teenagers have been arrested after carjacking an Uber driver Wednesday night.

Eastpointe Deputy Police Chief Eric Keiser tells us the teens requested an Uber around 9:30 p.m. and stole the Cadillac from the driver. This happened on Charles R. Street.

Keiser says the suspects, two 14-year-olds and one 15-year-old, had the driver take them to 9 Mile and Gratiot. They got out of the car and then came back and assaulted the 55-year-old driver.

The man wasn't badly hurt but the kids stole his Cadillac.

Warren and Roseville police were then involved with the search for the teens and the stolen car. Keiser says the car was tracked to a street in Warren, and then the suspects were found at a home there, too.

Warren police confirmed the teens were arrested. The parents of one of the teens, Tanika Smith-Kopkins and Toby Hopkins, say police didn't tell them what was happening when they showed up at their home on Maxwell.

"We couldn't hardly see because it was dark. We seen somebody slammed boys out of the jeep. We saw everything going on out here, we asked what was going on and we saw dogs coming every which way and lights flashing - that's what woke up my newborn. We asked them what was going on," Tanika said.

Warren police said her son was inside the family home and they didn't know what was happening. The Hopkins' say they don't believe their son did this.

"He was at a basketball game. He plays for Harper Woods High School. He was at a basketball game, I don't think he done that," Tanika said.

All three kids have had brushes with the law before and are being held in juvenile detention without bond. They're due back in court on December 12th when prosecutors will decide whether or not to charge them as adults.

Police didn't immediately say if the Uber driver had been hurt in the carjacking.
