WESTLAND, Mich. - Some rotten thieves carried out a despicable crime depriving kids in need.
They stole bags of holiday cheer items collected for Toys for Tots. But their shameful act is bringing out more of the good in others.
A little boy and his mom who wanted to make it right for some many kids, who may not have had a Christmas if not for people like them.
'Tis the season for thieves. Abbi Wisniewski says she was working at Independent Carpet One in Westland last Friday when two men posing as Toys for Tots volunteers stole boxes of toys donated for needy little children.
"It's disgusting, it's for little kids," said Abbi Wisniewski. "It's Christmas time, it shouldn't be happening.
"They seemed legit. I walked outside with them, looked at the truck green flat bed truck and it looked real. I said 'Here's the toys,' they took them like nothing."
The two suspects were white men in their 50s, one had a mustache. They were wearing reflective vests and were driving a green flatbed truck.
Other boxes of Toys for Tots were aboard the truck, leading Wisniewski to think nothing was wrong.
Owner Carl Francavilla, whose family business collects for Toys for Tots every year, has been very upset knowing the greedy grinches stole Christmas for so many metro Detroit children.
"When this happened I said 'What the heck.' Just terrible, horrible," Francavilla said.
But then something remarkable happened. People like April Williams and her son heard about the Christmas crooks.
"How could someone do that, I don't understand?" Williams said.
And her son, 7-year-old Landon had an idea.
"He said, 'Mommy I know you probably have some toys for me, let's take them and donate them to the kids who had their presents stolen.' I said, okay let's do it."
Landon and his mom aren't the only ones, who are stepping up. Independent Carpet One has been flooded with people looking to make up for what was stolen and then some.
"We are getting replentished, basically, and a lot of donations are coming in," Wisniewski said. "At least some good is coming out of it."
Police are searching for the two men suspected of stealing from this charitable organization.
Sadly, Toys for Tots told them it isn't the first time.
"They are low lifes," Francavilla said. "And they are going to get their due cause. Something's going to happen to them. Instant karma is going to get them sooner or later."
A spokesperson from Toys for Tots said to ask for ID when drivers pull up claiming to be there for collections.
If you would like to donate at Independent Carpet One, it is at 1400 N. Wayne Road, south of Ford Road.
