TROY, Mich (WJBK) - The cities of Troy and Rochester Hills have issued a boil water advisory after a large water main broke Sunday morning.
According to an alert from the city, the 84-inch water main broke at about 3 a.m. Sunday on South Boulevard, west of Dequindre. This is close to the Sanctuary Lake Golf Course.
The main break caused extreme flooding in the area, closing South Boulevard between Dequindre and John R because of damage to the road.
The affected area within Rochester Hills is south of Walton Blvd from Adams Road to Dequindre Road.
"Obviously, that's a lot of water; a lot of pressure," says Troy Police Department Capt. Bob Redmond. "It's created a huge sinkhole. We're not sure of the condition of the roadway at this time."
Many residents and businesses on the west side of Troy may be experiencing low water pressure. The east side of the city is serviced by a separate water main break and may not be affected.
Restaurants on the north side of Somerset were also closed Sunday due to the water main break.
Crews say they hope to have the water main break fixed by Tuesday. It's not known right now what caused the break in the first place.
