Vandal smashes 20 cars to try and steal one on Detroit's west side

As many as 20 cars were badly damaged after someone broke into a car dealership on Detroit's west side and trashed the place. But the vandal isn't off scot-free: he was caught on camera.

"For it to be destroyed by someone who wants to make a quick buck is disgusting," Alex Baize said.

Baize manages Metro Auto Sales on the city's west side. He's understandably upset over what he was forced to see when he walked into his family business Thursday morning

The front end of at least a dozen vehicles smashed and glass was scattered everywhere

It happened just before 5 Thursday morning and the crime was all caught on video

"He was trying to steal a 2014 Chevy Tahoe. He wanted to strip it down, take the wheels off it, take the engine, and transmission," Baize said.

He also said the suspect wanted the Tahoe so badly that he rammed into vehicles that he couldn't find a key for so he could move them out of the way and get to the Tahoe

Ironically, Baize says he just sold the Tahoe earlier this week

"Sold this Tahoe to a lady out of Florida through eBay. It's bad business to now tell customer we got broken into and the vehicle is destroyed," he said.

Baize says it's also bad business for him and is going to cost between $25,000 and $30,000.

Baize says this is the first time any crime like this has happened to this business and plans are in the works to prevent it from happening again

"I am going to upgrade security system and put in laser beam detection throughout lot," he said.

Baize says it would have been great if police had responded quicker but admits the real issue is with the criminal and he hopes this video will lead to his arrest.
