Victims identified in CMU shooting as teen suspect's parents
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (WJBK) - Authorities are providing more information about the two people killed in a shooting Friday morning on Central Michigan University's campus.
The 19-year-old suspect, James Davis Jr., fatally shot both of his parents, Mt. Pleasant police have confirmed. Police are still actively searching for Davis at this time.
Police have not released any details about what led up to the shooting. Earlier, though, police said they were in contact with Davis last night when they took him to the hospital for a drug-related incident.
Police in Illinois say the victims are Diva Davis, 47, and James Davis Sr., 48.
While the manhunt continues, students and staff are being evacuated from the campus in a "slow and methodical manner," said CMU Police Chief Lawrence Klaus, adding that buses are being used to transport them to parking lots or to the nearby Comfort Inn to be reunited with parents.
Klaus said that as of yet no members of police or residents at large have reported seeing the shooting suspect.
"We have not had any calls from the community who have seen him," Klaus said. "We have not had any assets put eyes on him.Right now we do not know where he is at. We have many assets out looking for him."
Police provided a live stream at 4 pm with additional details. Watch it in the embed below.
James Davis Sr. was a part-time police officer in Bellwood, Illinois, according to Bellwood Police Chief Jiminez Allen.
James Davis is described as being 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighing 135 lbs. He was wearing mustard yellow jeans and a blue hoodie, but police say they found clothes along the railroad tracks nearby so it's not sure now what Davis could be wearing.
Police say if you see Davis -- do not approach him. He is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him, call 911 immediately.
Two killed on campus in Central Michigan University dorm
Students received an alert Friday just after 9 a.m. about a report of shots fired on campus. The shots were said to have come from the fourth floor of Campbell Hall, which is a residence hall.
The university has been on lockdown since, but just after 2 p.m. authorities began shuttling students to a nearby hotel. Friday was the last day of classes before spring break, so many students had already left campus or were waiting for a ride home.
CMU has asked parents to stay off campus until further notice. CMU asks you go to the Comfort Inn, 2424 S. Mission St, where students are being shuttled. Staff will be on site to support the families.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder was on hand for the 4 p.m. press conference updating the situation.
"This was a terrible incident, it was an isolated incident, Snyder "This is traumatic to the residents, students and the community. I hope we can rally. If you see something, say something. We will not stop until we have caught this person. We have to support each other in these difficult times."
