(WJBK) - The Macomb Township community came together for a vigil Saturday evening at Dakota High School for a 14-year-old who was killed walking to school.
Victoria Cartwright was struck by a vehicle Friday morning on Heydenreich Road near Vine Drive.
The girl behind the wheel was another student, 16 years old, also heading to school with another 16-year-old passenger. Both girls were not harmed in the accident.
The vigil was held Saturday at Dakota High School and those who attended were asked to wear white.
A few hundred people came out to the event.
Cartwright would have turned 15 in a few weeks. Her friends called her Torey, which is what many of them wrote on their wrists at the vigil.
"She could really make someone smile, with just little effort," said friend Aaron Barbera.
The accident was a tragic mistake, and the community is now doing everything they can to help the driver.
"She's had a lot of support, and she will continue to have a lot of support," Dakota High School Principal Paul Sibley said.
The driver, her family, and the victim's family gathered together at the vigil to support each other.
"This all really goes to show that you just have to love people while they're there with you, and not to wait for something like this to happen to put a candle down for them," Barbera said.
Investigators are still working to discover why the victim had been on the road, with there being no crosswalk where the driver struck her accidentally.
The sheriff's office is also working to see if distracted driving may have played a part in the accident.
Nevertheless, it appeared to be a tragic accident involving kids simply on their way to school.
FOX 2 spoke with the father of the driver, who knew Cartwright for eight years, and he said it is important to note that the community is not angry with the driver, but support healing.
Grief counselors are available at the school for students looking to talk to someone.
