WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) - There was a moment of silence Thursday as friends, family, students and staff celebrated the life of 16-year-old Danyna Gibson, who was stabbed to death inside Warren's Fitzgerald High School on Wednesday.
It was chaos inside the school Wednesday morning as Warren police say another female student lunged at the teen with a steak knife while she'd been quietly doing schoolwork at her desk.
"We didn't hear no arguments or nothing," said witness Orion Taylor.
Police say the 17-year-old had been friends with SD, but heard Danyna told her boyfriend she had cheated on him. The teen brought the knife that morning, stabbing her twice in the chest. The teen was restrained in another room as the teacher got ahold of the weapon.
"She got the knife out of the girl's hand. Thank God for her," Orion said.
Then the school's security officer gave Danyna CPR, desperately trying to save her. She died an hour later in the hospital.
"We're just trying to accept the fact that this happened. It's still shocking to us," said Danyna's cousin Kateria Burns.
This tight-knit community and Fitz family shared memories.
"She'll always be here in our hearts, our spirits and our souls," a speaker said at her vigil.
They're all struggling to accept the heartbreaking reality that this beautiful, bright teen is gone.
"It's really hard to process all of it," said student Colin Robinson.
Fitzgerald High school will open again on Friday with grief counselors still on hand. Meanwhile, Warren police say that teen will be arraigned on murder charges Friday.
