The Wayne County Sheriff's sergeant that was killed in a hit-and-run accident Tuesday morning has been identified.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says 55-year-old Sgt. Lee Smith was hit and killed while he was jogging along Hines Drive. We're told he had just retired from the department where he worked, the Road Patrol and Parks. He was married and has a 28-year-old son.

Authorities say they're looking for a small black SUV that possibly has front-end damage in connection with the crash. We're told a witness followed the SUV for a while after the accident but eventually lost sight of the car.

According to two witnesses riding a pickup truck, the SUV crossed into the wrong direction on Hines Drive and then hit the Smith. The driver of the truck jumped out and gave him CPR but said Sgt. Smith suffered severe head trauma.

The passenger in the truck got into the driver's seat and tried to chase the SUV but lost sight of him and later returned to the scene of the crash.

Hines Drive was closed Tuesday at Inkster Road as authorities investigated. It reopened just after 2 p.m.
