WESTLAND, Mich. (WJBK) - Westland police are launching a major crackdown on drivers speeding past stopped school buses.
One year ago FOX 2 was in Westland when a parent complained that as they waited for their child to get off the bus, drivers were breaking the law. One year later we went back to see if anything has changed.
It was a cell video taken by a father at the same Westland bus stop on Ford Road last year that first got the attention of police and then FOX 2.
"The school bus driver blows the horn and people still fly by," said parent Mike Golen.
The video shows one car after another breaking the law.
"It's very dangerous someone is going to get hurt. probably one of my daughters."
When a school bus turns on the red flashing lights and the side stop sign comes out, that means you have to stop in both directions of traffic, the only exception is if there was a physical barrier in the median.
"It is absolutely the law," said Sgt. Robert Wilke, Westland police. "If it is an undivided highway then you need to stop on both sides."
Since Mike Golen alerted the Westland Police Department of this problem, they have been actively trying to increase awareness. Roughly 90 tickets were issued over the past year.
"Failing to stop for a school bus is a $215 violation," Wilke said.
Then FOX 2 saw the progress in action - the 3:45 bus stop on Ford Road.
"If we are gaining more and more compliance and more and more education that's our goal," Wilke said. "And we're accomplishing it."
They are hoping this turnaround from what we saw a year ago to what happened on this day can be repeated in other communities.
"People need to pay attention," Golen said. "It could be their kids that are out there."
