Woman assaulted Saturday night walking to her Farmington apartment
A woman was assaulted Saturday night while walking home to her apartment, Farmington police said.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. Saturday when the 32-year-old woman was walking on Grand River Avenue, east of Halsted Road to the Jamestown Apartments.
Police said the attacker, who was a stranger to the victim, asked the victim for a cigarette and then grabbed the woman and tried to cover her mouth.
The woman was able to fend off the suspect, who then ran from the area. The victim suffered only minor injuries.
Police were notified and established a perimeter, with the assistance of a Southfield Police K-9 unit, but were unsuccessful in tracking the suspect.
“This case is a top priority for the department. Clearly, we have a deranged individual lurking in our community and we will deploy the full resources of the department and enlist assistance from our neighboring law enforcement partners to identify and arrest this suspect,” Farmington Public Safety Director Frank Demers said in an alert sent to community members.
Police released a composite sketch of the suspect, who is described as a heavy-set white male, approximately 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-11, in his late-20s to early-30s. The suspect has a beard and a mustache and "scruffy" hair. He was wearing baggy pants and a dark gray or black t-shirt with a white "Star Wars" logo on the front. The suspect may have been driving a dark compact sedan similar to a Toyota Prius.
