Yellow Door Art Market in Berkley closing after 14 years in business
(FOX 2) - A local market in downtown Berkley is closing after more than a decade in operation.
The Yellow Door Art Market has served as a community location for artists all over Michigan to sell their wares. They will officially shut down on Jan. 18.
Announcing their goodbye on Facebook this week, the market's owners said the latest lease they were offered was too expensive and would make it too difficult on the local artists that sell their products at the store.
"Because of this harsh reality, we've had some hard conversations and discussed difficult choices. We understand this is incredibly sad news and please know our decision to close Yellow Door was not made lightly," they wrote.
The Yellow Door was born out of a fruitful conversation in 2010 that would turn into 14 years of business. It eventually became a home where local artists could offer all kinds of items.
After sharing the news with their vendors, many are offering discounts in the final days of business.
Their hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 12 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
However, the owners will keep the neighboring store open, called Catching Fireflies. In a bid to keep that business open, operations will move into the Yellow Door Space until the lease ends.
Meanwhile, they will remodel the building in hopes of years of continued business.
