Detroit Winter Storm Watch: National Weather Service warns of hazardous conditions Wednesday and Thursday

As our largest snowmaker of the season bares down on Metro Detroit, the National Weather Service wants everyone in the area to be ready – which is why a Winter Storm Watch was issued more than two days before the snow arrives.

On Monday, the NWS issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of southeast Michigan, cautioning against heavy snow and light icing starting Wednesday afternoon.

The Winter Storm Watch will be in place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday until 7 a.m. on Thursday as the NWS says snow accumulations will be between 4 and 7 inches for most of southeast Michigan.

This could greatly effect travel and they warn that Wednesday night and Thursday morning commutes will be impacted.

How much snow in Metro Detroit?

What they're saying:

The NWS says to expect between 4 and 7 inches. FOX 2 meteorologists Derek Kevra and Alan Longstreet are saying about the same – 3 to 6 inches of snow.

But it may not all be snow. With two days before the system even arrives in Metro Detroit, a great amount of uncertainty still exists.

For example, the freezing line could move farther north, which would cause for more icing and less snow. Either way, the roads will be a mess on Wednesday and Thursday.

Who is impacted?:

The National Weather Service for most counties in Southeast Michigan are under the Winter Storm Watch:

  • St. Clair County
  • Lapeer County
  • Livingston County
  • Macomb County
  • Oakland County
