Snowday calculator: Will Michigan schools be canceled on Friday?

More snow is coming Thursday into Friday, which could make for a slippery drive to work and school across Metro Detroit.

Southeast Michigan is expected to get between half an inch of snow or up to three inches of snow – depending on where you live.

Friday marks the last day of classes before winter break for most schools in Metro Detroit, but what are the chance of a snow day to start the break a bit early?

There's a very helpful tool to predict exactly that: the Snow Day Calculator.

How to use the Snow Day Calculator

The Snow Day Calculator requires one thing: your zip code.

Just enter your five-digit zip code and click calculate.

For instance, in Southfield, there's a 94% chance of a snow day on Friday, Dec. 20, based on the snow forecasted to fall Friday morning.

Detroit has a 93% of a snow day while Monroe is looking at 72%. Port Huron, which is expected to three inches of snow on the ground on Friday, has a 96% chance. All of these odds are based on data entered at 10:45 a.m. on Thursday and may change throughout the day.

What is the Snow Day Calculator?

The Snow Day Calculator does exactly that – it calculates the odds of a snow day for the current day and the next day.

It was developed by a student at MIT and works with the National Weather Service to deliver a prediction of whether there will be a snow day on the current day or one for tomorrow – based entirely off your zip code.

When will school closings be posted?

School closings for Friday will be called in the school districts as early as Thursday night. If schools do call off classes on Friday, they will likely come in the morning as students and families are getting ready for the day.
