Southeast Michigan Winter Weather Advisory: Several inches of snow expected to start Christmas week

DETROIT (FOX 2) - For those of you looking for snow this holiday week, we've got it! 

Let's set the stage: Not as cold a start to your Monday. Temperatures are in the 20s as compared to single digit temperatures and bitterly cold wind chills this past weekend. So a southerly breeze today starts a warming trend, (highs near 35, which is seasonal) but it will still be cold enough for snow.

How much snow to expect

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at noon and runs through 1 a.m. Tuesday for Lapeer, Oakland, Livingston, Macomb, and St. Clair Counties.

Accumulating snow will be the heaviest north of M-46. Two to four inches of snow are possible in that area, which is near the Thumb, while areas near Flint could see 1-3 inches.

In the Detroit area, snow is expected to start falling around 1 p.m. In Metro Detroit, 1-2 inches are expected. Mixing (freezing rain and sleet) is expected Downriver, and could lead to slightly less snow piling up.

Ice could be prevalent in Washtenaw County, which will be under a Winter Weather Advisory from 2-10 p.m.

Overnight lows remain below freezing, so what falls will stick. The snow wraps up overnight, though some light snow is possible Tuesday morning.

Holiday travel forecast

Are you going up north for the holiday? Traverse City and Mackinac are looking to have accumulating snow. Be sure to give yourself extra time to travel safely.

On Christmas Eve, we get a break from the snow, although there could be light snow lingering in the morning hours. Temperatures warm up to near 40, and that trend lasts through Christmas, so chances for precipitation on Christmas evening could fall in the form of rain.

Mainly dry after Christmas with the warm-up continuing. Highs on Friday will be near 44, near 50 degrees with rain for the weekend.
