Snow squalls, more cold expected Tuesday in Southeast Michigan as bitter temps grip region

Both bitter cold and snow are part of the forecast Tuesday.

Today is the coldest day of the work week. An arctic blast overnight has our morning temperatures 10 to 15 degrees colder than the same time yesterday.

Highs this afternoon will only be around 19 degrees with wind chill values remaining in the single digit range throughout the day. No worries on breaking a record for cold today - the record is -9 degrees in 1893.

A Winter Weather Advisory has expired for Metro Detroit, leaving about half an inch of new snow in most areas. Low pressure producing snow squalls could bring snow accumulating in the 1 to 3 inch range. Allow yourself extra time for slick roads from this morning into the early afternoon.

Looking ahead, another chance for snow Thursday with moderating temperatures by Friday. Readings become seasonal with highs in the mid 30s, but it's only temporary. Colder air back in place for Sunday with lows leading into Monday at around 8 degrees. January in Detroit!

What is a snow squall?

Snow squalls are when snow comes down heavily in a short period of time. This snow is often accompanied by gusty winds that lead to limited visibility.
