5-year-old boy hit by car in Hamtramck; police seek hit-and-run driver

Police are searching for a driver who hit a 5-year-old child on a residential street and never stopped. The little boy, Amaan Alam, was critically injured and is still in the hospital.

Witnesses describe the car that hit Amaan as an early 2000s silver Chevy Impala with a spoiler on the trunk lid. Police say the car also had a "donut" spare tire on the passenger rear side.

Amaan was hit Saturday afternoon in the 2300 block of Zinow Street, which is near Carpenter Avenue and Nagel Street.

Amaan's father has been by his son's side at his hospital bed since the accident. Police got the 911 call Saturday just before 4:30 p.m. Amaan's father gave FOX 2 permission to talk to his other children, who witnessed the accident.

"There was a car coming and I told the car to stop but he didn't stop; he went even faster," says Afsana Alam, Amaan's 7-year-old sister. "My brother just went under the car and, like, slipped over there."

"When I saw him laying on the ground, I called everyone as they sat on the porch and my grandma, like, ran as fast as she could and picked up my brother," says Amaan's 9-year-old brother, Affan.

Police say the suspect was last seen driving southbound on Fleming Street from Zinow Street. Police say the only description they have of the driver at this time is that he's a black male.

Neighbors say cars speed down this one-way street all the time.

"I know there's a lot of kids on this street and something was going to happen sooner or later," says Paul Chervenic. "What's worse than a kid being hurt? Nothing, really."

Amaan's sister and brother have a message for the hit-and-run run driver.

"We're kind of, like, angry," Affan says.

"At the person who did that to our little big brother," Afsana continues.

"And then we're sad because it's my little brother and he, like, laid down. His eyes were closed. We thought he was dead," Amaan finishes.

If you have any information that could help police track down the driver, you're asked to contact the Hamtramck Police Department at (313) 822-5281.
