DTE contractor's death in Romulus caused by electrical issue

It started as a routine pole change Wednesday morning in Romulus when some sort of electrical issue occurred, injuring and killing a line worker.

The victim worked for Asplundh, a contractor for DTE, and the incident happened at the corner of Mary and Grover streets.

Investigators say this was a standard job when everything went wrong.

"It was just a routine pole change. They were changing on a pole for regular routine maintenance," Romulus Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Krause said.

One neighbor FOX 2 spoke with lives at the corner where the tragedy happened.

"I was on the computer, I heard a pop. The power went out. I heard a couple of people yelling. I came right out and saw the guy on the ground. They were giving CPR right away. Another guy, he was on the phone calling police," the neighbor said.

Other people who live in the area gave their condolences.

"I know it's a dangerous job. Somebody has to do it and unfortunately, and evidently something bad happened here," said Steven Huntington. "You think about their families, and I'm sure he may have kids, so it's a sad situation. A sad day, and we just have to send our prayers out to the family."

At this time, investigators are not saying exact where or how this tragic accident happened.

DTE issued a statement saying in part:

"The safety of our employees - including our supplier family - is our No. 1 priority at all times. We are working with local authorities to investigate the cause of the accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the worker's family and co-workers during this extremely difficult time."

There are several investigation teams at the scene, including MIOHSHA, to figure out exactly what happened.

The name of the victim and any information about him has not been released.

All we know right now is the family has been notified and they are out of state.

A statement from the Asplundh Construction he worked for said in part:

"Asplundh Construction is working with local, state and federal authorities to investigate the cause of the accident.

"The safety of our employees is of paramount importance.  Our thoughts and sympathy are with our employee’s family, friends and coworkers as we all deal with this terrible loss."
