Family surprised with furniture after losing everything in fire

After a fire destroyed everything they owned-- including the roof over their heads -- a Detroit mother and her children have a new home just in time for the holidays.

Life is getting better for Derhonda Douglas.

"We were living in at the shelter after a house fire and we lived there for 8 months," she said.

Derhonda was able to secure a new home for herself and her three teenagers through the shelter where she was staying, but she had no money to furnish it until Bank of America and Humble Designs stepped in.

"It's just so rewarding because we meet our families, their shoulders are slumped in, the kids are sad," said Julie Nagle of Humble Designs.

All of these furnishing are donated, and for Derhonda, it feels like Christmas came early. The tour brought tears, hugs and gratitude.

"I am shaking, I just can't believe it this, thank you," she said.

Before she saw her newly furnished bedroom, she said these heartfelt words:

"I don't have to sleep on the floor any more. We can sit at the table. We can eat. We can watch TV in the living room," she said.

As for the people who made this happen:

"You're restoring hope, you're restoring dignity and we're giving them a really fresh new start in life," she said.
