Generous viewers help grandfather who walks miles to work

Rain, snow, or shine, a local grandfather is forced to walk miles to work because he can’t afford a car. It’s a story we first brought you earlier this week. Since that story aired, Fox 2 viewers have stepped up to help.

“It's crazy. I'm surprised people are doing all of this stuff.”

Bob Keller is overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers.

They saw his story – how he walks miles from the home he’s on the verge of losing in Dearborn Heights to his job in Taylor. They were apparently moved by his granddaughter Samara’s letter to Fox 2.

People throughout Metro Detroit and beyond responded, flooding Fox 2 with calls and emails asking how they could help. Some offered Bob used vehicles.

Those generous strangers donated more than $3,500 to a gofundme.com account.

“That will probably go to a place so we can move. We have until the end of February. We have to look for a house to rent,” said Bob.

“I'm very excited. Thank you for the people who I know have a good heart. They don’t have to do this, but they wanted to this, which I'm thankful for,” said Samara.

Samara lives with her Grandpa, along with her siblings, mom, and a few other relatives.

Bob doesn’t have a car just yet, but he’ll keep warm as he walks to work.

Someone dropped off a winter coat, socks, boots and a $100 Meijer gift card.

He and his family are well aware the free-handedness of the unfamiliar likely won’t stop here.

Bob says one of the first things he’ll to do when he gets a car is take the family on a road trip. First he’ll have to brush up on his skills. He hasn’t been behind the wheel of a car in quite some time.
