Major gas line break fixed at 12 Mile, Woodward

BERKLEY, Mich. (WJBK) - WEB UPDATE (11 p.m.): The major gas line break has been fixed according to city officials. 

The city released a statement: 

"The Berkley Department of Public Safety reported the leak at Woodward and 12 Mile has been stopped and there is no longer any gas escaping. Consumers Energy will continue to work on the repair overnight. All roads are open, but there will be lane closures on southbound Woodward at 12 Mile and eastbound 12 Mile at Woodward." 

A major gas main break has been reported at the intersection of 12 Mile and Woodward Avenue, according to the Berkley Department of Public Safety. 

Traffic is shut down on both the southbound and northbound lanes of Woodward at 12 Mile. Eastbound traffic on 12 Mile is being diverted into the neighborhood; westbound traffic on 12 Mile is being directed onto northbound Woodward.

 Motorists are asked to avoid from the area until the repairs are complete. The break occurred around 330 pm and it is unknown how much time is needed to complete the repair.

Local businesses at the strip mall on the southeast corner of 12 Mile and Woodward are closed, along with the gas station on the southwest corner of 12 Mile and Woodward. Public Safety is not evacuating residents in the area at this time.
