Police: man shot, killed on Woodward; pregnant woman the only survivor
DETROIT (WJBK) - A Detroit man was killed early Monday while trying to drive himself and a pregnant woman to a nearby hospital.
According to police, someone pulled up next to their car and started shooting. After being hit with the gunfire, the man tried to drive himself to the hospital but never made it; he crashed into a construction site on Woodward.
The car plowed through the railing and dirt and launched into the air. The man died at the scene but the woman was pulled out alive.
"When I heard it I was like what the hell, I didn't hear the gunshots though," construction worker Rode Keel said. "If you'd seen the car - it looked pretty bad."
The man was identified as 25-year-old Daniel Robinson. he was driving the 2009 Hyundai Sonata with a 24-year-old mother-to-be in the front seat next to him. They were south on Woodward near Palmer around 1:30 am when another car pulled up and started shooting.
"It came up behind them then the side, and fired shots into the vehicle," Detroit Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt said.
Police believe three to five shots were fired into the driver's side. Robinson was shot in the chest and quickly lost control of the car. The pregnant woman tried to get control of the car before it smashed into the construction site.
Keel said, judging by the damage, they were moving fast.
"He had to have been going fast because when he flew over the top of that dirt pile, he was never touched. he went up high," Keel said.
The young woman was pulled to safety and rushed the hospital. She's currently in stable condition at a Detroit hospital.
Police say they're still working to gather information on possible suspects and trying to determine if Robinson was targeted or, if it was a case of mistaken identity. Dolunt added that Robinson does have a criminal past.
"I believe he's a parolee for assault with intent to commit murder but that's the only thing on his record," Dolunt said.
Detroit police ask anyone with information to step up. They said the young mother-to-be is traumatized, but alive.
"She tried to do the right thing. It didn't work out. Unfortunately, he's deceased and she's our only witness," Dolunt said.
